Sillyconductor and Rochite are two monikers of the same Romanian artist living in Bucharest. Sillyconductor excels at the more classical/mathematical side of the imaginary duo: projects such as Ventichitara (a selfmade improvisation instrument built out of USB fans), 100 Catronomes (a golden rendition of Ligeti’s Poeme Symphonique employing 100 ManekiNeko cats), Symphonic Cowboy (collages of symphonic music played on the Akai MPC sampler) or the Pianosaurus, his latest project, the reinforce the liaison between technology, classical music and humour.
Inspired by early mechanical instruments such as the Alnico Bosendorfer Imperial piano of Conlon Nancarrow, Pianosaurus (The Shortcut Piano) was programmed in order to explore how pianos sound when freed from their mechanical restraints, favouring the fastest and easiest ways to manipulate volume, length, timbre, tonality, speed and octave of a sound, switching instantaneously different tonal modes. Pianosaurus is available either as a stand-alone wooden/metal/fabric sexy instrument that allows the public to explore a simplified version of the software, or a full blown surround system that shamelessly reveals all possibilities.
Rochite, the emotional alterego, performs a weird juxtaposition of field recordings, classical music sampling, pop structures, polyrhythmic beatmaking, unsuccessful beatboxing, absurd children’s lyrics or nonsensical series of vowels and traditional Romanian folk metaphors. Hiding his identity behind a white mask created by Ioana Nemes and covered in large strokes of abstract shapes and colors projected by Dreamrec, the resulting live performance has toured several electronic music festivals in Europe.
